DIY: Planning Your First Trip to Italy

The "DIY Italy Itinerary Table" is intended to help DIY travel planners design a trip to Italy that allows them to see as many highlights as possible and also determine where they might want to return on a future trip. The list of cities in the "Itinerary Table" are in geographical order and can be viewed in the reverse order (e.g., Rome to Milan or Milan to Rome). The cities are also accessible via train travel.

If possible, try to travel during the “shoulder seasons”, the times in between high and low season. The weather is typically excellent and the crowds are smaller. Shoulder season in Italy is April, May, September, and October.

Wondering where to stay?

Use a map to identify the location of the Top Attractions that you will be visiting and secure a place as close as possible to those locations so as to optimize your time sightseeing and not getting from place to place. Utilize TripAdvisor to assist in identifying highly rated hotels in the desirable locations. You may also want to research Rick Steves Guides for places to stay.
